Short Curriculum Vitae for Docent, Academy Research Fellow Tuija Rankama

Tuija Rankama (19530724) grew up in Helsinki, Finland. After taking her matriculation examination in 1972 she entered the University of Helsinki to study archaeology. During her student years she participated in several rescue excavations as an employee of the National Board of Antiquities, Finland. She received her MA in archaeology from the University of Helsinki in 1979 and an MA in Archaeological Practice from the University of Birmingham in 1983. In 1984-1990 she was employed in field archaeology projects, mostly in Utsjoki, Finnish Lapland, by the National Board of Antiquities and the University of Helsinki Department of Archaeology, and since 1988 as a research assistant at the Academy of Finland.

In 1990-1996 she was a graduate student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. During that period she participated in archaeological fieldwork in Alaska in 1992-1993. She received her Lic.Phil. degree in archaeology from the University of Helsinki in 1995 and her Ph.D. in anthropology from Brown University in 1996; her dissertation was titled Prehistoric Riverine Adaptations in Subarctic Finnish Lapland: The Teno River Drainage. She was appointed docent of archaeology at the University of Helsinki in 1998.

Dr. Rankama has worked as acting professor of archaeology at the University of Helsinki (1997, 2008-2009), as acting Lecturer of archaeology at the University of helsinki (2007-2008), as teacher of Finnish, American, World, and Circumpolar archaeology, archaeological field techniques, and lithic analysis at the universities of Helsinki and Oulu, as research assistant at the Academy of Finland, and as a field archaeologist for the National Board of Antiquities, University of Helsinki, Birmingham University, Brown University, the North Alaskan Native Association, and the Sutton Hoo Research Trust.

Since the mid-1980´s, Dr. Rankama’s own field research has focused on the Utsjoki region in northern Finnish Lapland, where her interests lie particularly in the interaction of culture and environment over long timespans. In 2002 she and Jarmo Kankaanpää discovered in Utsjoki the Sujala site, which has turned out to provide the first evidence of the spread of carriers of the eastern technological tradition of blade production into northern Fennoscandia soon after the end of the Ice Age. In 2009, again together with Kankaanpää, she confirmed the existence of the first eastern-origin Early Mesolithic site on the north Norwegian coast.

Rankama is also one of the foremost Finnish authorities on lithic technology and has founded and led a study and research group focused on theoretical and practical aspects of lithics at the University of Helsinki since 1997. She is the director of the research project Interfaces in the Mesolithic Stone Age of Eastern Fennoscandia and co-director of the Lapland Pioneers Project. She has received several research grants over the years, most recently from the Finnish Cultural Foundation (2004-2006), the Niilo Helander Foundation (2005), and the National Geographic Society, USA (2006). She has also functioned as a referee for scientific publications in Finland and abroad.

Rankama is currently (2009-2014) employed as an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki, co-directing the Lapland Pioneers Project with her husband, Dr. Jarmo Kankaanpää, who is employed by the same project at the University of Helsinki as a University Researcher.
