Patrik Gustafsson

Ph.D. student in Archaeology at Södertörns högskola/Södertörn University.

My thesis will primarily focus on the pioneer and settlement phase during the Early Post-Glacial time, i.e. 12500/10500-8000 BP (10500/8500-6000 BC). The prime geographical setting is the Kolmården area, which is situated in the southern part of the county of Södermanland and the northern part of the county of Östergötland. In my research the region of Eastern Central Sweden will also be of importance and, in a wider context, the Nordic and the Baltic countries.

The main purpose is to study when the first people came to the region and where they came from and also when the settlement phase was established. In my work I will also discuss concepts as identity, migration, travels, human contacts and cultural encounters. The Early Mesolithic society is characterized as being extremely mobile, as traveling was a natural part of everyday life. As today encounters with other people happened all the time, but in different ways. Physical remains of such encounters on Mesolithic sites in the area of study are for instance local materials such as quartz and non-local lithic materials as flint from Scania.

My point of view is that the presence of non-locally found rock on sites is well suited for studies and discussions regarding cultural encounters and human contacts. In the area of study there are actually a variety of raw materials. Quartz dominates, but there are also flakes, blades, cores and tools made of materials like Kinnekulle flint, Tuffites and Porfyrites from Dalarna and Hälleflint from Bergslagen etc, as opposed to Scania where flint is totally predominating. Methodically I will examine collected materials from previously made excavations and museum collections in order to scrutinize what kind of different raw materials where the Mesolithic man preferred and for what. I will execute surveys in order to locate raw material sites as well as additional Mesolithic sites. To receive more information regarding raw material use I will perform test excavations to complete the study and hopefully to get some radiocarbon dates as well. Besides raw material use, different lithic strategies and especially those that are considered rare or “exotic” for the region are of interest and will also be highlighted.
